At 1,012 kilometres the Loire is France's longest river, and it's also regarded as Europe's last wild river.Just fifteen minutes from Saint Etienne, the broad River Loire winds lazily through the stunning unspoilt natural beauty of the Loire Gorge. Perched as if standing guard at 640 metres on high ground above the Lac de Grangent, the village of Chambles has a fascinating history. The medieval town boasts an 11th century tower in the Château d’Essalois and a 14th century Romanesque church. There are also more than 60 km of walking trails and bridle paths to be explored.
