Built in 1924, this is one of the oldest tourist railways in the French Alps, taking visitors on an unusual and exciting journey that climbs 800 metres up the mountainside and through the dramatic plunging landscapes of the Chartreuse. It has the steepest gradient in Europe, climbing to a natural balcony that opens on to a horizon of mountain peaks stretching from Mont Blanc to the Vercors… In 20 minutes you reach the village of St Hilaire du Touvet, a Mecca for paragliders and hang gliders. At the top is Icarus's Laboratory, the Funicular's new museum which takes a fun and educational look at air, flight and gravity.
